About

Jhonny Guerrero is a surfer from Chorrillos in Lima, Peru.   A film about his 5 year journey to become a pro surfer - Into The Storm- was released in May 2020.

Growing up in Lima is not easy - especially if you are from one of the many working class barrios that dot the city. For the kids that live in these areas there are few opportunities to get ahead and there are the constant temptation of drugs and crime.

Despite these problems, Jhonny has remained focussed on sport and making his own luck. As a young boy Jhonny saw surfers riding waves at the nearby beach of La Herradura and started copying them–  at first using a foam beach cushion and then a broken board he found.

With the support of local surfers Jhonny's love for the sport grew, along with his skill and dedication. In 2014 Jhonny’s raw talent was spotted by former World Champion Sofia Mulanovich who trained Jhonny at an elite level for 2 years.

As well as winning numerous national surf contests, Jhonny finished top 3 at Under 18 level in the South America region with the World Surf League in 2017 and 2018.

These rankings qualified him to compete at the WSL World Junior Championships in 2017 and 2018 where he finished 9th.

Jhonny has also represented his country several times at the ISA Junior World Championships. He achieved his career best result in 2018 with a 5th place finish, beating over 100 surfers from 44 countries.

Thanks in large part to Sofia Mulanovich and with the support of the Australian Embassy, Jhonny has been able to train and compete in Australia. In 2018 he also travelled to Hawaii for the first time, surfing world famous breaks including Sunset and Pipeline.
